1970’S STYLE INSPIRATION: THE DVF WRAP DRESS

When I was asked to choose any time period and recreate a fashion look, I immediately thought of the 1970s!! My absolute favorite time in fashion. Who doesn’t love the 70’s? I love looking at old photos of my mom and how stunning she looked dressed head to toe in her 70s fashion!  I was born in the late 70s’ so early memories of my child hood are of my mom cleaning the house on Saturday mornings listening to hits of the 70’s like Earth, Wind & Fire, James Brown, and Chaka Khan just to name a few.

Let’s take a trip back to 1974. While only at the age 26, Diane Von Furstenberg created her iconic wrap dress. The knitted jersey wrap dress was designed to make women feel beautiful and empowered. It was a very easy way to get dressed for work, as the design included a belted wrap closure that gathered and cinched at the waist.

In March of 1976, Diane’s success with the wrap dress landed her the cover of Newsweek magazine. They declared her the most marketable woman since Coco Chanel.

I don’t think there is any designer who has not recreated DVF wrap dress with their own twist. It’s definitely a fashion staple and every woman absolutely should own one! With tons of jersey knit and endless prints to choose from, Mood Designer Fabrics has you covered.

I chose a beautiful burgundy floral print to make my wrap dress. I was able to drape my design directly on the dress form. I used my plain sleeve sloper for my sleeve pattern, and added 3/4″ elastic to the cuff. The bottom of the dress was cut on the bias for an asymmetrical look. Be sure to check out the details below.

So, shout out to the 1970’s and the lovely Diane Von Furstenberg for my dress inspiration!! I hope you like the photos (nothing like wood paneling and metallic wall paper to complete the 70s vibe).
