Holiday Style: “LBD” In Metallic Brocade

This dress was inspired by my take on the LBD "Little Black Dress." As a designer I love to make garments for others that are unique and edgy. My personal style is not as daring.  I'm usually much more laid back. However, I do feel you can make a statement with a great fabric, a pop of color or even a cute garment detail.

So this holiday season I wanted to make a fun cocktail/party dress that was cute, flirty, comfy and had a little shimmer!

I came up with this dress design and I draped it right on my dress form. It was a really simple drape. V-neck wrap front, short sleeves and the bottom was just a simple circle skirt pattern. The back detail is where it gets interesting. I used the same concept I used for one of my earlier posts, "Stunning African Prints In 3 Great Looks". I absolutely love this back. It has the wrap detail, and leaves just a little skin exposed. Very classy!

Now the fabric I used was this beautiful Metallic Nude and Black Abstract Brocade from Moodfabrics.com. The fabric was very good to sew with but, be mindful of the fraying. I made sure to "stay stitch" all of my edges before sewing the seams. I thought this brocade felt smooth, and I was comfortable without lining my dress. That's just my personal preference. You could totally line your garment if you choose to have added comfort.  This fabric also gives great structure and shape without feeling bulky. I absolutely love the way it turned out.

How would you wear this beautiful metallic brocade? I would love to hear your ideas!

Enjoy!!
